Boreholes drilled in the Eastern Cape

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Al-Fidaa Foundation has been involved in managing donor funded borehole projects since 2019. The Al-Fidaa Foundation has successfully drilled a number of boreholes in the Eastern Cape

PROJECT GOALS

  • The school or clinic will have their own reliable source of water for drinking and sanitation.
  • The water supply will be linked up to the school’s or clinics’s plumbing infrastructure providing full water services whenever it is required.
  • Residents surrounding the school or clinic will have access to water during water cuts or when day zero arrives

Colosa Village, Idutywa – Vulindlela Primary School Borehole

PURPOSE

To ensure a reliable, continuous supply of water to already poverty-stricken communities in the Eastern Cape.

SITE OF BOREHOLE

Vulindlela Primary School, Colosa Village, Idutywa – Borehole no 5.

The distance from this village to the town of Idutywa is about 10km. This village is divided into three areas. Total population of all three areas is approximately 3500 people. All these areas need water; sometimes children have to take turns to go to school, so that some of them can go for the search water in mountains and rivers. A borehole will be a big relief and better life for these communities.

PROGRESS ON MAIN ACTIVITIES AND PREPARATION

  • The First Phase was to divine the drilling location and then drilling of the borehole.
  • The Second Phase (contractors Rayco Electrical) was to install borehole pump, the tank stand and the tank installation, including a flout switch so that the water in the tank doesn’t overflow.
  • Trenching for the water pipes and cabling.
  • 3 taps are connected to this borehole; 2 taps for the school use and 1 tap for the community.
  • Sending of water samples to laboratory to confirm safety for consumption.

CHALLENGES: The main challenge was procuring service providers in the Eastern Cape, causing delays.

SITE OF BOREHOLE

Mzamomhle Junior Secondary School – Borehole no. 6 (Madiba Village, about 12km from the town of Butterworth).

Identified by the Al-Fidaa Foundation team as an area in dire need of water.

The village consists of approximately 2000 people, some of whom live in shacks. The school collects rain water to try and lighten the burden.

A Borehole will be a big relief and contribute to a better life for this community.

PROGRESS ON MAIN ACTIVITIES AND PREPARATION

  • The First Phase (completed months prior to phase 2) was to divine the drilling spot and the drilling of the borehole.

Ngquto Village in Idutywa – Lower Falakahla Primary School Borehole

PURPOSE

To ensure a reliable, continuous supply of water to already poverty-stricken communities in the Eastern Cape.

SITE OF BOREHOLE

Lower Falakahla Primary School, Ngquto Village in Idutywa – Borehole no 7.

The village is made up of few villages with different names. Approximately 3000 to 3500 people stay here. Water is very valuable to these villages; there is no clean water for drinking. Whatever little water they get, they have to work hard to get it. Sometimes they stay without water for days due to the streams having run dry. Those who can afford, buy water and fill up their tanks. The fields are large useless due to the drought. Water is life for these villagers; even the filthy water regarded as unfit for human consumption, for them, is like gold. A borehole will play a signifivant role in safeguarding the life and health of the people, bringing relief and better life for these communities.
